Explain about Internet and Intranet in details

Internet:

The internet is a globally connected network system that uses TCP/IP to transmit data via various types of media. It is a  system architecture that has revolutionized communications and methods of commerce by allowing various computer networks around the world to interconnect. Sometimes referred to as a “network of networks,” the Internet emerged in the United States in the 1970s but did not become visible to the general public until the early 1990s. By 2015, approximately 3.2 billion people, or nearly half of the world’s population, were estimated to have access to the Internet.

Inventor of Internet:Robert E. Kahn & Vint Cerf
The major features of Internet:

The WorldWide Web: The Internet, in contrast, is the underlying network connection that allows us to send email and access the World Wide Web. A web page is a document encoded with hypertext markup language (HTML).HTML allows designers to link content together via hyperlinks.

E-mail: Short for electronic mail, e-mail or email is information stored on a computer or server that is exchanged between two users over telecommunications. When someone send and receive email, he uses an email client which allows him to create and interact with emails from other computer users. His email client can be web-based, meaning you check it through your web browser (examples include Hotmail, Gmail, or Yahoo Mail) or it can be an application on your computer (like Outlook, Thunderbird or Mail). For using e-mail, a user must have an e-mail address, which have been create by him adding his user name or anything else that is available in the e-mail server by adding his user name to the e-mail server’s domain name, as in techtown@gmail.com.

Telnet: Telnet (TN) is a networking protocol and software program used to access remote devices  and terminals over the Internet or a TCP/IP computer network.Telnet is used to access a computer that hosts their website to manage his or her files remotely.

File transfer protocol: File Transfer Protocol or  is an application layer protocol which moves files between local and remote file systems. It runs on the top of TCP, like HTTP. To transfer a file, 2 TCP connections are used by FTP in parallel: control connection and data connection. It is mainly used for transferring the web page files for a website from their creator to the computer that acts as a server for other computers on the internet.

Internet Relay chat (IRC):Internet Relay Chat is a process for chatting that involves a set of rules and conventions and client/server software. Special IRC program are used to  participate in chat room discussions but many chat rooms are set up in web sites, enabling visitors to chat directly in their browser window.

Intranet:
lntranet is a private network based on TCP/IP protocols, belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization given by the own network.Internal or private network of an organization based on internet technology (such as hypertext and TCP/IP protocols) and accessed over the internet. An intranet is meant for the exclusive use of the organization and its associates (customers, employees, members, suppliers, etc.) and is protected from unauthorized access with security systems such as firewalls.

Inventor of Intranet: Tim Berners-Lee

The major features of Intranet:

Document & Content Management :This is the main feature/function of any Intranet system. An Intranet system should store and manage company documents in the form of files, pdfs, spreadsheets, etc. It acts as a gateway of knowledge allowing employees to store, access and share the content and documents securely and easily with just a few clicks.

Search Capability: The search feature helps employees pull the information related to content or people by searching through specific keywords or phrases, categories, filtering the tagged content, etc.
Information Generator:Intranet system should allow members to generate and view information as and when required. Timely request processing and form processing are important tasks to be performed every now and then. An Intranet with good information generation capabilities allows employees to access business information.

Sharing & Collaboration: Where there are great employees, there are great ideas and opinions which should be shared with other members. A good Intranet should not miss the great feature of sharing and collaboration since Intranet is the only platform where communication flows in different ways i.e. top to bottom, bottom to top, peer to peer, etc. Moreover, to make sharing a non-stop process, organizations should incorporate a blogging feature in their Intranet since it will help employees to share, view and comment on the posts of internal as well as external participants.

Social Networking: Companies are recognizing the value of social networking and social sharing over the internet. Moreover, with the increasing demand of bringing the social networking inside the corporate walls in order to create awareness about the company online as well as to include it in the marketing strategy, companies should look for an Intranet suite that supports social networking.
